About Robin Farmer
Not many people grow up to live their childhood dreams. At age 8, Robin Farmer told her mom she wanted a career as a writer. Decades later, she has earned national, regional and state awards for her ability to write about complex issues with accuracy, sensitivity and emotional truth.
As a professional freelance writer since 2010, her work has appeared in the Washington Post, Theroot.com, College of William and Mary Alumni Magazine, Richmond Magazine, and Black MBA Magazine.
She has the reporting and editing chops for any assignment, but she is drawn to topics dealing with health, business, education, travel and stories about people defying the odds.
She has written thousands of stories as a reporter for the Hartford Courant and The Richmond Times-Dispatch. Her investigative projects and education coverage led to her selection as one of 12 American journalists chosen for a year of customized study and international travel as a Knight-Wallace Fellow at the University of Michigan.
Her extensive journalism career includes experience as an investigative reporter, feature reporter, columnist, education editor, and a concert and film reviewer.
As a journalist she has witnessed the fall of the Argentinian government, examined the suicide of an 8-year-old, chronicled the survival tactics of gifted students at dangerous urban schools, investigated sex crimes against children, discovered the oldest living Buffalo Soldier, and observed the last electrocution in Virginia.
She has taught journalism and lectured at Virginia Commonwealth University.
A seasoned storyteller, she also enjoys writing screenplays and is a member of the Virginia Screenwriters Forum. She directed, produced and co-wrote her first short film for the 48 Hour Film Project during the summer of 2010.
When she’s not writing, she volunteers with community organizations to support writers and empower girls and women.
Robin is happily married to her husband, Michael, an award-winning columnist and reporter. They reside near Richmond, Va.
