About Megan Turney (Translator)
Freelance commercial and literary translator from Norwegian (Bokmål and Nynorsk) and Danish into English. BackEditor for Norwegian, Danish and English translations. Copy-editor and proofreader in English. Recipient of the National Centre for Writing's 2019 Emerging Translator Mentorship programme. I have an MA (Hons) in Scandinavian Studies and English Literature and a distinction in spoken Norwegian from the University of Edinburgh, and am on track to receive a distinction in my MA in Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Manchester, expected to graduate in late 2020.
Through this MA, I specialised in literary and commercial translation, subtitling, translating for international organisations, and translation technologies, for which I contributed to the United Nation's WIPO database. I have now completed a research dissertation on Bokmål and Nynorsk neural machine translation, looking into whether the leading NMT platforms suffer from a Bokmål bias. While studying, I continued my work as a library assistant, book reviewer and freelance translator and editor.
My most recent work has involved: co-translating a memoir with fellow literary translator Rachel Rankin; the translation of the new Jørn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger Nordic Noir novel for Orenda Books; regular business-to-consumer translations for Scandinavian Language LSPs/direct clients in Norway and the UK; BackEditing for Norwegian and Danish translations for a US-based LSP.
